Barbara’s research focuses broadly on the psychology of recruiting and retaining happy, healthy blood donors and other donors of substances of human origin (SoHO). She leads the global Donor Research Network at the University of Queensland which aims to promote understanding about, and awareness of, the importance of donors of SoHO.

Barbara has published more than 100 articles in high impact and practitioner journals including Nature Human Behaviour, Annals of Behavioural Medicine, Transfusion, Transfusion Medicine Reviews, Breast Feeding Medicine and Journal of Personality and Social Psychology. This work has also impacted international policy and practice through citations in EU publications, WHO policy documents, UK.gov policy documents, Canada Health documents and reports for the Analysis and Policy Observatory (Australian Government).

Barbara was the AAUT Australian University Teacher of the Year (2019) and received the edX Prize for Exceptional Contributions in Online Learning and Teaching (2018).  In addition, in 2019 she was awarded the University of Queensland’s Partners in Research Excellence Award in recognition of her work with Lifeblood
