Adjunct Associate Professor, Queensland University of Technology (QUT)

 

Dr Catherine Hyland, PhD MSc, is employed with the Australian Red Cross Blood Service in the Research and Development Division and holds an adjunct professorial appointment with the Queensland University of Technology.

Cate was awarded a PhD from the University of Queensland for studies characterising the molecular diversity of the Rh (Rhesus) blood group system.

Work experiences outside Australia include immunogenetic training and experience in the University Hospital in Leiden, the Netherlands, and at the University of California, San Diego.  Dr Hyland has published consistently in peer review journals, presents annually at international and/or national professional meetings, is a member of the ANZSBT and the ISBT, and is active on the ISBT Red Cell Immunogenetics and Blood Group Terminology Working Party.

Current research interests include the area of circulating cell-free DNA and non-invasive prenatal assessment for the fetal RhD blood group and other atypical blood group antigens. These studies have been part of an exciting clinical, academic and industry collaborative research with translational outcomes in the transfusion medicine setting.
