MEDIA RELEASE: September 3, 2010

WHERE HAVE ALL THE MEN GONE?

No, we’re not talking about the much publicised man drought in Australia and New Zealand, we’re talking about the fact that more women donate blood in Australia than men.

So with this in mind the Blood Service is issuing a challenge to all men this Father’s Day...can you beat the girls?

This Father’s Day you can donate with your son, brother or even your own Dad to prove that the men of Australia have what it takes. In the previous 12 months, there were 30,629 more female donors than male donors.

Spokeswoman for the Blood Service Kathy Bowlen said: “We always need more donors to come forward and I’m sure the fact that women are beating men should encourage many more male donors roll up their sleeves.

“In fact, men make better plasma donors than women, because they tend to have higher blood volume, making it quicker and easier to collect plasma. With demand for plasma set to double in the next 10 years, we would love more men to come forward.

“Every father wants to set a good example for their children and we believe one of the easiest ways to do that is to donate blood and encourage your children to be lifelong donors when they turn 16,” she added.

“There really is nothing more rewarding than knowing that every time you donate you save three lives. It’s the best gift you can give this Father’s Day.”
