Board

As we are a division of the Australian Red Cross, the Blood Service Board reports to the Red Cross Board, which has overall responsibility and oversight, and appoints all non-executive Board members.

Also, because Australian governments fund the Blood Service to provide blood products and services to the Australian community, we have specific financial and other reporting obligations to the National Blood Authority.

Role

The Board plays a vital role in ensuring the governance of the Blood Service. It is responsible for our efficient operation and sets the culture of operating responsibly within the community.

Our professional Board has nine non-executive members and one executive member, the Chief Executive. The Chief Executive and Board Secretary report to the Board. All Board members are selected on the basis of their skills and experience, according to pre-determined criteria, to ensure the Board as a whole meets the needs of the Blood Service and its stakeholders. Members are generally appointed for a three-year term, but may be eligible for reappointment.

The responsibilities of the Board are to oversee the organisation’s strategic direction, financial and operational activities and risk management.
